Gerard is the Australian Trade Commission’s Senior Trade Commissioner for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and Consul General in Dubai. He is currently based in the Australian Consulate General in Dubai. The key sectors of focus in the MENA are education, infrastructure, sustainability, agribusiness and advanced engineering. The responsibility of the Dubai office is to manage the MENA region and to assist in identifying opportunities in target sectors and to work with Australian firms in key markets.
Gerard was born in Canberra, Australia and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the Australian National University. He is also a graduate of the Company Directors program from the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has completed an Executive course at the JFK School for Public Administration at Harvard University.
Gerard commenced his career with Austrade in 1987. Subsequently he was appointed as Trade Commissioner to Milan (1988), Moscow during the collapse of the Soviet Union (1990-1993), and Tehran during the opening up of the oil industry (1994-1998). In 1999 he was appointed Senior Trade Commissioner of LATAM and Consul General Sao Paulo (1999-2004). While in this capacity Gerard created the Australia Festival promotional program in 2001. Prior to taking up the role of Senior trade and Investment Commissioner in New York, Gerard was State Manager for Austrade in New South Wales based in Sydney (2005-2007). During his posting (2007-2011) in New York he was responsible for financial services investment attraction in the Americas and for managing Austrade’s activities in the North East of the US.
Gerard is married and accompanied on this posting with his wife, Pari, and son, Mani.
