CSR Initiatives in the Global Supply Chain

 

Over the last decade, the idea of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has greatly evolved. From just being environmentally friendly, it has become a holistic framework that encompasses the environment, social and corporate governance. The overarching rule that all actions taken are meant to meet the needs of the present society without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their own needs, is a key driver.

The responsibility of sustainability is no longer limited to the individual, but it extends to corporations, industries and even governments. The global supply chain industry has by default, a large environmental impact, through its carbon footprint.

Acting for People

The logistics business, is predominantly a network business driven by our employees. Keeping that in mind, CEVA Logistics aspires to ensure the protection and professional development of our employees. Thinking beyond that, globally, we have a broad reach and responsibility in the communities where our employees live and work. CEVA Logistics actively reaches out to support social innovations and engage local communities.

In Malaysia, CEVA Logistics worked closely with L’Oréal, a major producer of luxury and consumer products, to develop a social initiative of providing jobs for the hearing impaired at our warehouse since June 2020. The employees support the site’s value-added services operations to ensure they work in a safe and conducive environment that accommodates their needs.

It is a great sense of joy for us to support L’Oréal’s initiative to help people with disabilities to achieve financial independence and social inclusion,” says Rames Ramachandram, contract manager of L’Oréal operations.

CEVA Logistics has supported many international movements of medical supplies needed in the fight against COVID-19, using our global network and capabilities for local good. Early in the pandemic, the company organized an airlift of two flights per week to deliver several hundred million masks from China to France.

In addition, CEVA Logistics was also appointed by General Motors (GM) to manage its entire ventilator production supply chain in support of the U.S. pandemic response. CEVA was responsible for delivering hundreds of parts to the GM Kokomo, Indiana, facility, in the U.S., setting up the entire supply chain of Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers in one week — a process that could normally take two months.

Recently, CEVA Logistics joined the Singapore Changi Airport community in a humanitarian aid project to transport 14,000-kilogram of oxygen concentrators from Los Angeles to Jakarta via Singapore.

Elaine Low, managing director for Southeast Asia and Pacific, CEVA Logistics said, ‘‘At CEVA Logistics, we believe our global presence gives us a great responsibility in the communities in which our employees live and work. We want to support and enrich these local communities through what we do best: logistics and transportation services. We are honored to partner with Changi Airport Group in this humanitarian effort for our friends in Indonesia.’’

 

Acting for Planet

Being in the logistics and transportation industry, we recognize our responsibility in preserving air quality, fighting climate change and accelerating energy transition. The CMA CGM Group aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

In order to achieve this target, CEVA Logistics is incorporating environmental considerations in a variety of areas of operations, from warehousing to transportation and procurement.

We regularly assess our environmental footprint to look for areas to contribute to environmental sustainability in our communities. For example, some of our warehouses around the world produce more energy than they consume, using solar panels, wind power, LED technology and efficient equipment. We also look to reduce or eliminate the use of plastic packaging.

To help our customers keep track and make informed decisions about their freight transportation options, we have developed “a logistics eco-calculator” hosted on our website. This serves to estimate the carbon footprint of transporting a shipment via ocean, air or ground. Estimating carbon footprint and planning accordingly are the first steps toward a more sustainable supply chain.

In addition, we have taken several steps in the past few years to affect industry change, such as being an active member of the Clean Cargo Group and joining the Sustainable Air Freight Alliance (SAFA). The Clean Cargo Group is a business-to-business sustainability initiative aiming to reduce the environmental impact of the cargo shipping industry, and SAFA is made up of shipping companies, airlines and freight forwarders that are committed to measuring and reducing their carbon dioxide emissions.

Most notable, we joined the United Airlines Eco-Skies Alliance early this year. This program is the first of its kind involving global corporations working with the airline to power future flying in a more sustainable way. CEVA Logistics is taking a lead in the air cargo industry to reduce the logistics-related impact on the environment at the source by creating demand for more sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

CEVA Logistics and other Eco-Skies Alliance leaders will work with United Airlines to collectively purchase approximately 3.4 million gallons of SAF this year. With its nearly 80 percent emissions reductions on a lifecycle basis compared to conventional jet fuel, this is enough SAF to eliminate approximately 31,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, or enough to fly passengers more than 200 million miles.

In maritime shipping, CEVA offers our customers alternative fuel options including biofuel, LNG and biomethane for reducing the greenhouse gas emissions connected to their ocean cargo shipment.

Acting for Responsible Trade

CEVA Logistics promotes responsible international trade through strict compliance with existing laws and regulations. We want our employees to operate ethically—everywhere we are, all the time. To that end, regular employee training is provided to ensure our workforce has the latest regulatory information and is committed to following our CEVA Code of Conduct.

Our business practice is aligned closely with applicable government requirements and global human rights initiatives. These guides provide a solid framework from which we implement our Human Rights Compliance Program and Human Trafficking Policy to prevent forced labor, human trafficking and other human rights abuses in the global supply chain.

Julien Topenot – Global Head of CSR at CEVA Logistics & a specialist on the topic of global environment & sustainability. Prior to joining CEVA Logistics, he was with CMA CGM for close to 13 years, helming Group Environment & Sustainability.

During his tenure, he assisted the company in achieving the Ecovadis CSR Gold Certificate since 2015 and developing the first of its kind green ocean offer with Biofuels and LNG after successful pilots with international customers.

He was also in charge of carbon management and accounting and CSR reporting. He played a key role in developing the Global CSR policy and defining the Group’s environmental strategy.
