Nazery Khalid is a well-known commentator and scholar in the field of maritime and oil and gas. He has been involved as a speaker, moderator and panelist in over 250 seminars, conferences and talks worldwide and webinars. He is also a prolific writer, having published over 350 articles in print (including prestigious refereed journals, chapters in books and magazines) and on online platforms on a wide range of topics. He has also published research reports and edited conference proceedings.
He came to prominence as a maritime scholar and a leading industry figure at Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA), a policy think tank under the Ministry of Transport Malaysia, where he served as Senior Fellow / Research Coordinator and Head of Center of Maritime Economics and Industries from 2004 to 2014. While at MIMA, he had a hand in shaping Malaysia’s maritime polices and represented Malaysia at International Maritime Organization meetings and ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group meetings.
Nazery was visiting scholar at Bahria University, Karachi (2008), Cardiff Business School (2010), University Paris Diderot (2011), National Institute of South China Sea Studies in Hainan, China (2013) and Sun Yat Sen University in Guangzhou (2013). He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Ocean Engineering Technology and Informatics, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu and in the Bachelor of Social Science (International Relations) Program at Taylor’s University, Malaysia. He also sits on the Advisory Panel of Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology Malaysia and the Advisory Councils of Yayasan Peneraju Pendidikan Bumiputera, a Malaysian Government agency promoting education. He served as the Honorary Secretary of Association of Marine Industries of Malaysia (AMIM) from 2015 to 2018.
Nazery holds an MBA from International Islamic University, Malaysia and a BA in Business Administration from Ottawa University, Kansas, USA. He is currently Head of Group Corporate Communications at Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation, a company listed on Bursa Malaysia involved in the marine, defence and security industries.
